Guide to the Magicis Races

 

 

Mage – Mortal – This singular term names the first carriers and practitioners of magic.

Magi – The plural form of mage.

 

Aelfr – Immortal – Elemental magic only – Derived from the Old English word, Aelf, and the Old Norse word, Alfr. Both were original spellings and pronunciations of the modern word, Elf. This is the singular form and can be pronounced as Alf or Elf.

Aelfar – Derived from the Old Norse plural form, Alfar. It can be pronounced as Al-far or El-far.

 

Mercurate – Immortal – Magic only works with or in water – Derived from mer, which means sea, and curate, which means to oversee or protect. This is the singular form, and the two words are pronounced together as they are individually.

Mercurati – In its plural form, the word is pronounced with an “E” sound at the end.

 

Reliqui (Rel-a-key) – Immortal – No magical abilities, only magical traits – Latin word meaning “Balance Owed.” This is both the singular and plural form.

 

Dreyrinyta (Drairy-nee-ta) – Immortal – Born dreyri have no magical abilities, only magical traits, but some turned dreyri do. Dreyri is the Norse word for blood, and Nyta is the Norse word for eat/eater. Combined together, Dreyrinyta means blood-eater. Often shortened to Dreyri, these terms are both the singular and plural forms.

 

Therianthropy (Theer-ee-an-throp-e) – Greek terminology for the form of magic that allows shifting from one species to another. 

Therianthrope (Theer-ee-an-throp) – Mortal – Only magic is the ability to shift – The individual with Therianthropy.  A shape-shifter can take the form of any non-Homo sentient being.  A Grizzly Bear-shifter, Bobcat-shifter, etc. can only take the form of that particular animal. A Selective-shifter can take the form of any animal in a particular species such as feline.

 

Hybrid – An individual who is born from parents of two or more different races, including human. Mortality or immortality is dependent upon status of parents. Magical abilities or traits also depend on what parents pass down.
